William's daughter Eliza P. Vermilyea Johnston (1842-1923)

 

The Vermilyea family traces its roots back to the Vermigli family of Florence, Italy c1500. Son Pietre Martire (Peter Martyr) went to England and collaborated with Archbishop Cranmer on the first English Prayer Book. Descendant Isaac Vermilye was the first to immigrate to America c1600.

 

 

James T. Johnston with Eliza Vermilyea Johnston. They were the parents of Harry Vermilyea Johnston, Elizabeth Winifred Johnston Randall, John Harvey Johnston, James Benson Johnston and Donald Denny Johnston.

 

The home of William's brother Jesse Vermilyea (1809-1846) was part of the pre-Civil War Underground Railroad, and still stands today as an historic site of interest.
